Kotor – the City of Myths and Legends
The most visited city in Montenegro
Thanks to its uniqueness and unquestionable charm, Kotor is visited by thousands of tourists every summer as people from the whole world flock to this city nestled in the Bay of Kotor. It might just be one of the most breathtaking locations in Europe. A great way to experience this great town is to rent a private villa and absorb its luxury and comfort.
A long and interesting history
Historians claim Kotor has existed for 2,000 years. Kotor or Cataro means “place of Springs” in a distinct karst area in the southernmost fjord in Europe. Throughout the centuries, Kotor opened its doors to Greeks, Illyrians, Romans, Goths. The influence of the Venetian Republic can be seen everywhere. Additionally, Byzantium ruled Kotor, as did the Nemanjics. Its turbulent history continued in the following centuries, until after the First World War when Kotor finally became part of Montenegro. The entire medieval Old Town of Kotor is a well-preserved marvel and rightly earned the title of a UNESCO Heritage Site.
Sightseeing in Kotor
- The Old Town – The home of Kotor’s culture, history and tradition. From churches, cathedrals, museums and palaces, to narrow streets, squares and markets; go back in time as you experience medieval vibes.
- St. Tryphon Cathedral – Built back in the 11th century, it is older even than the great Notre Dame. This Old Town cathedral holds the remains of St. Tryphon, the patron saint of Kotor.
- Maritime Museum – Located inside a baroque palace in the Old Town, the museum contains memories of, now long gone, sailing days. Mementos of Kotor sailors, artists, sea builders, crafts men and diplomats are all kept in this authentic museum.
- The Island Gospa od Skrpjela (Lady of the Rock) – This stunning island is located across the rustic village Perast. It is an artificial island made by sailors from Kotor and Perast who built it around a small rock, where according to legend, they found an icon of the Holy Mother of God.
- Upper Town Walls – These stretch vertically above Kotor and are a real challenge to climb. We guarantee that the reward will be worth it, as you get to witness one of the best views in the entire bay.
